Interview with Chase & Status – UK’s #1 Group
It’s been over sixty-five years since Great Britain’s number one band – The Beatles – came across the Atlantic to perform on the Ed Sullivan Show in 1964. Infusing creativity and a ‘new’ sound, the group from Liverpool proceeded to take the music world by storm spearheading the invasion of rock-n-roll. Now, decades later, another British number one is coming stateside ready to find similar success. Known for incredible drums sequences and earth rattling bass, Chase & Status are currently one of the biggest groups in Europe. Consisting of Saul Milton and Will Kennard, the duo got their start in drum & bass genres with productions championed by BBC Radio I and a host of notable record labels. Following the release of their 2008 debut album, ‘More Than A Lot’ the group has gone on to showcase a diverse range of production qualities. Having been called the “back-bone” of Rihanna’s Rated-R album and offering up tracks for Snoop Dogg, the duo’s resume speaks for itself and is unrivaled in today’s music world:

- ‘No More Idols’ is a PLATINUM certified album in the UK
- ‘No More Idols’ charted at #2 in the UK & stayed in Top 10 for 10 weeks

To celebrate the Deluxe Edition release of their newest album, ‘No More Idols,’ Chase & Status are bringing a once in a lifetime concert performance to Miami on March 25th. As part of the Ultra Music Festival, the show will headline an incredible week of music on the sun soaked beaches of Miami. Regarded as having the most incredible live performances in the world by Mixmag and Spin magazines, Chase & Status plan to take Miami by storm with a full concert production in tow. Combining elements from electronic and rock shows, the massive event will leave every attendee speechless (just check the video below). Taking some time away from their busy preparation schedule, the duo hailing from Manchester were kind enough to answer some exclusive questions before their trip to Florida:
Cue the Sound: Your music videos and live-shows have won awards and been described as “stunning” – do you make an effort to find a dimension of art between each performance and your music?
Chase & Status: Our live show and music videos are really important to us and we are heavily involved in the creative process. We’ve both got strong opinions on what sort of art we like and I think this shows in the visuals for our live show, our music videos and the artwork throughout our album campaign.
Having received every form of award and accolade in Europe – how does it feel looking back on the last ten years of your career? Have you achieved your original goals?
We always make a point of never resting on our laurels, we are proud of what we have achieved so far, but there’s always more to be done and new ideas to try, so we try not to focus too much on our successes.
Is there one instance, accomplishment or memory that can be described as your proudest moment as a group?
Headlining the West Holts Stage at Glastonbury last year was a real stand out moment for us, and also being nominated for Best British Group at the Brit Awards this year was also something were very proud of.
What inspires you to keep working on music and touring? And what’s on the horizon for the future, anything you can hint at?
We’re constantly inspired by what is going on around us, there is so much exciting new talent out there, and we’re lucky to be able to do what we love for a living. We’re working on a third album which we’re hoping to have finished later this year, and we also have a Record label, MTA Records which allows us to nurture and develop new talent.
With an exclusive performance coming up at Ultra in Miami, is there one main goal you have going in? Will it be different than past gigs?
Ultra is going to be a huge show – we’re looking forward to seeing the response from the American crowd and I’m sure they’ll bring it.
With an infinite amount of fame in Europe and a sold-out tour last summer in America – do you view the States as a growing market for continued & future success?
Bass music is having a really good time in the states at the moment and it’s great to be a part of that movement, we would like to spend more time out here, and can’t wait to bring our full live show to Ultra.
A big thank you to Saul and Will from Chase & Status, and be sure to follow this super-group as they are primed for a North American take-over in the coming months.
