After over a decade of leading as front-man of the widely popular band Death Cab for Cutie, Ben Gibbard (now Benjamin Gibbard) has broken away to grace us with an intimate solo album called Former Lives.
Featuring over 10 years worth of songs written by Gibbard throughout different phases of his life, this album is expected to be extremely personal – including acapellas, waltz ballads and latin inspired tunes.
My favorite track on the record is Shepherd’s Bush Lullaby which is a short but harrowing piece that highlights the strength of Gibbard’s naturally melodic voice – layered over and over above one another. It sets the mood for the rest of the album which plays through more like a journey than a set of collected songs. Lily is also another catchy acoustic gem on which Gibbard seems to describe a lovely girl that resembles someone we all know.
Respective to the album release, Gibbard is also performing a live show presented by KCRW here in Los Angeles on Wednesday November 14th at 7pm. Paired with Damien Jurado, who is also a soulful and deeply acoustic artist, the show is certain to be unforgettable that night Tickets are currently available on www.ticketmaster.com for $50 apiece.
